Bellydance has been a popular way to connect in with one’s own body  through the journey of pregnancy for many decades. Although the story of  bellydance being an ancient woman’s dance preparing one for birth is  unfortunately not exactly an accurate one, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t  one of the most beneficial ways of moving the body. Not only do we  learn to isolate and strengthen our pelvic area which is immensely  helpful throughout these 9 months, but it is an opportunity to slow down  and relax the mind, soul and body.

HoneyBea’s gentle offerings for prenatal bellydance, stretch and  movement sessions are an amazing way to keep your body and mind aligned  throughout the week. These sessions can be done from Bea’s home in the  northern suburbs of Melbourne, or from the comfort of your own home,  removing the extra challenges of traveling and using up any necessary   energy.

Whether you’re in your first, second or third trimester, bellydance  and exercise will help you in more ways than you can imagine!

Health benefits of bellydance during pregnancy:

  • Strengthens the pelvic floor and helps increase mobility
  • Helps  ease lower back pain commonly associated with pregnancy by encouraging a  neutral spinal position and maintaining lower back strength
  • The grounded nature of belly dance means it is low impact on joints but with mild to medium cardio-vascular benefits
  • Increases core body strength, improves flexibility and aids circulation
  • Excellent preparation exercise for the physical demands of labour and birth
  • Faster return to pre-pregnancy fitness and healthy weight
  • Belly  dance techniques include muscle isolation exercises that may be useful  during labour – the labouring mum has increased awareness of how  different abdominal muscles feel when relaxed or contracted
  • Moderate  regular exercise has been shown to boost the release of beta endorphins  which can provide an overall sense of well-being

Whats included in these sessions?

Each session is fully catered to your needs and where you’re at in  your journey- HoneyBea’s gentle approach ensures you will feel heard and  supported. These two-hour sessions begin with a check-in to see  where you’re at and how you have been traveling, and any possible  injuries/areas you want to focus on. We then move onto a full-body  stretch and warmup- lots of floor stretches and simple little drills to  awaken your muscles. This is followed by our grounded movement practice,  focusing on the hips, lower back, and any areas you need to strengthen.  I have experience with what movements can and  shouldn’t be done in  each trimester, so know you’re in good hands! After our dancing is done  we can either go for a walk around the block to stretch the legs out, or  get stuck straight into our cool down stretches.

When and how often?

As these are privately held sessions, they can be organised for  anytime throughout the week. It is recommended you do 1-2 sessions per  week to keep you elevated and strong. Creating a weekly routine with  HoneyBea, or contact her to find out her current availabilities.
